A three-man gang of armed robbers at the weekend raided the popular Bureau De Change market along Sakpoba Road in Benin the Edo State capital and carted away over N12million in the process.
The gun wielding robbers, who were dressed in the outfit of men of the Special Anti- Robbery Squad (SARS), were said to have trailed one of the Hausa traders at the exchange market who went to the bank to cash money for his office.
Some of the traders at the market had believed that the robbers who followed their victim behind were men from the SARS who escorted the man to the bank.
But things turned sour within a few seconds as people within the area started running for their lives amid tension and confusion as the gunmen shot sporadically in the air after they robbed the victim of about N9million and another victim N3million.
It was learnt that the robbers stormed the Bureau De Change market in a Prado jeep which they parked some distance away before carrying out the daylight operation.
They were said to have immediately ordered people around the area to lie down as they kept on shooting until they zoomed off with their loot.
Armed policemen from the state command were quickly called in for rescue but the robbers had escaped to an unknown destination before the police arrived the scene.
Angry Hausa traders and bystanders including sympathisers booed the police for arriving late.
