Misinterpretations Of Our Culture, Nigeria. By: Homason. Pgs 12, 13, 14 & 221. ...Many people nowadays behave like Romans even when they are still in Israel, rather than behave like one when in Rome. To identify with your culture is doing that which is generally accepted by the community you find yourself. 13: We, Nigerians, must note and begin to value our cultures, respect our traditions and be slow to imbibe other sub cultures that creep in from foreign lands even though they might be perceived to cause no harm at first. In a contextual religious country as Nigeria and other African countries, it is a taboo, "Aru" (as the Igbos may call it) to greet by kissing. Even when we hug the opposite sex, as one of the most common ways of expressing greetings among friends/relations (mostly among youths), there is still an atom of guilt or frown in the minds of the committer/guilty and, similarly, the onlookers. It is also not agreeable with the ears and reasoning of Nigerians to utter/hear the frequent use of the F-word (as commonly known). In fact, this sounds un religious and irritating to me- I don't know about you, but to the original inventors it may not be so.... Pg 14: Although, we cannot categorically and singularly exterminate all borrowed cultures, no way, but we can choose the edifying ones. Pg 221: Let it be said and known here that "These acts of "kissing" (as a form of greeting) and using the F word (What-da-f*ck, or f*ck you, etc.) don't, and can never, fit our African way of life." Therefore, Let's call a spade one. Extract from Homason's Lib.
