Shiites take over streets in Abuja

The members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), better known as the Shi’ites, on September 22, Thursday, stormed the streets of the capital city of Nigeria, Abuja. My source reports that Shiites demanded the immediate release of their leader, Sheik Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, who has been held out of touch by the Nigerian army since last year December. The Whistler reports that the members of IMN mainly dressed in blacks were on a peaceful protest to the Unity Fountain located between the Three Arms Zone and high scale Maitama District when they were encountered by the police who tried to stop their protest. The police reportedly resorted to the use of tear-gas causing pandemonium and stampede amongst the Shiites and road users. The group earlier expressed fear that El-Zakzaky might die due to his bad health. Many people were feared dead after a bloody clash between Nigerian soldiers and the members of IMN in Zaria, Kaduna state on December 13-14, 2015.The army claimed that it had responded to the Shia followers’attempt to kill the Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai. But this claim has been strongly denied by the Shiites and several human rights organizations who argue that the attack was pre-planned.
