The management of Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State has shut down the institution indefinitely following a protest by its part-time students which led to destruction of automobiles and properties valued at several millions of naira, including the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) news crew vehicle.
It was gathered that the students were protesting against the institution’s “no school fees, no exam” policy.In the ensuing pandemonium, several students sustained varying degrees of injuries while being dispersed by security agents.
The polytechnic’s Public Relations Officer, Mustapha Oshiobugie, said yesterday that: “The school has been shut indefinitely. Students of the School of Part Time Studies (SPATS) were instructed to pay their school fees and register before they can write their first semester examination. Those who did not comply went on rampage and disrupted activities on campus, the destruction was massive. Several vehicles were destroyed. Clearly, there was no death recorded but management has to shut down the school”.
The incident began at the second campus of the school known as Philipa Idogho Campus when some of the students were denied access to the examinations hall which commenced on Tuesday.
It was also gathered that some of the affected students who managed to write their examinations the previous had their scripts torn by invigilators.
