The Adventist Men Organisation (AMO) and Adventist Women Ministry (AWM) of Seventh-day Adventist Church, Choba, Rivers Conference, Nigeria, after a fundraising programme for Adventist Nursery And Primary School (ANPS) Choba, had a football match to round up the programme today.
The football game which began by 6 p.m registered 2 goals at a stretch from a striker, Mrs. Esther Achinike Nsirim, for the women. However, at the last minutes of the first half, Mr. Felix Ochikpo took a tactical free kick which amazingly was a goal for the men.
At second half, the women decided to re-strategise on their scoring techniques, and this strategy gave them a hedge of 2 more goals which placed them at 4 goals ahead of the men. This strategy was where Football became Handball. The women scored this two goals using their hands. The men, being frustrated by the goal scoring pattern of the women decided to follow suit. Furtunately, this brought 1 goal from a top player, Mr. Okechukwu, for the men.
It was a funful event where even the referee became a player for the men aswell.
Finally, the match came to 90minutes with 4-2 win for the women.
The women were very happy and expressed this by singing one of their local songs as they danced round the football pitch;
"show them the way (show them the way),
Show them the way (show them the way)
Show them the way - show them the way-ooooo, Women, show them the way."
While they sang on, their rival, the men, also sang their own in this manner;
"show them the way (show them the way),
Show them the way (show them the way)
Show them the way - show them the way-ooooo, We men, show them the way."
This got everyone confused and wondering why the men sang thesame song as the women. But the meaning was that both men and women referred to themselves.
The occasion was graced with dignitaries from various parts of the state and more of scholars from the University of Port Harcourt. Scholars like Professor Barikor, Professor Matthew Wegwu, Dr. Iyke Worlu and lots more. Other learned men and women of great and influential class/calibre were members of the church which also were fans of the game.
The Youths cheered the game by playing trumpets and beating drums.
Everyone was excited at last and thanked God for such a memorable experience.
